Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The word Ramadan roots from Arabic literature “ramida” or “ar-ramad”, which means scorching heat or dryness. Muslims all over the world observe this as a month of fasting. Muslims believe in this month, god shows himself to humans as this is the month in which first verses of Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Mohammed.

In the month of Ramadan, practicing Muslims were instructed to pray 5 times a day and from dawn to dusk they should not eat or drink or smoke or have sexual activities. As the sun goes down, people will start eating again (breaking the fast). This meal is known as “Iftar”. In countries like Dubai, markets open after Iftar and stay open all the night. This usually continues for thirty days sometimes twenty nine days depending on the visual sightings of the crescent moon.

This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Fasting is meant to teach patience and allowing them to think about how the poor and homeless suffer without enough food. In Arabic countries, It’s been said that fasting, praying, reading Qur’an and giving charity strengthens their faith, teaches them discipline, gratitude, and humbleness, and in short, makes them a better Muslim. According to Islam, the thawab (rewards) of fasting are many, and during the month of Ramadan it is believed to be multiplied.
