Onam: Harvest Festival

Onam is the biggest and most important festival in the state of Kerala, India. It is a harvest festival celebrated with joy and excitement by the people of all communities all over the state for 10 days. It is believed that Onam celebrations are started from the time of Kulasekhara Perumals (800 A.D). The Onam festival falls during the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the months of August-September according to Gregorian calendar.

This festival is celebrated to welcome their king Mahabali from Patala ( the underworld), whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Nambudiri Brahmins of Kerala are the most spirited about Onam celebrations as they credit it’s origin to their own community.

But after I did a simple math with average video frame rate (24 to 30 images per sec) with the saying “one image is worth 1000 words”, it is coming to around 1.8 million words. It is very true and it’s just amazing to see the evolution of online video usage in the last decade.

The New Era of Video Invitations and Video Greetings

Before I write about Video Invitations and Video greetings and the new way of inviting or greeting your loved ones, did you ever wonder about evolution of invitations?  Invitations were used by only for social events by the aristocracy (Kings, Queens, Ladies, Lords, Dukes and Duchesses) in England and France beginning in or around the 18th century.

They were all hand written and calligraphy was the elegant way of showing that they were well educated. This is how each invitation was written.  Once written, each invitation was placed in a handmade envelope which would include the invitee’s names and they used to seal with a hot wax. With no postal service in place, these invitations had to be hand delivered.
